Four Seasons Resort Oahu, Hawaii.
The sunlight in Hawaii was unforgiving that day. Everything felt slightly overexposed. So bright that my camera kept warning me, so bright that I could see the groom’s mother’s tears catching the light as they trembled.
When I first asked Rachelle and Qingyu how they met, they sat upright in front of their laptops. As the story unfolded, the camera slowly tilted downward until only their shoulders remained in frame. I could no longer see their expressions, only hear their voices. I listened to their story while looking at those two shoulders on my screen. This was their wedding, more than a decade after they first met in middle school.
Time moves people into different places, different seasons, different versions of life. It lets them grow separately, carrying new names and roles. He believes in fate. That in the days when paths seem unlikely to cross again, time quietly gathers those who belong together and brings them back to the same place. They are two people who traveled far, only to be returned to one another.
